Learning To Read Is Easy and Fun With
FUN PHONICS, Children, Today's Joy!

Children learn to read phonetically with an integrated curriculum
that is positive and fun.

February 1999 -- FUN PHONICS, Children, Today’s Joy!, a beginning reader and activity set helps children  read phonetically while it weaves geography, geometric shapes, numbers and music throughout its pages and thus avoids the confusion children often experience when learning is separated into isolated subjects.

Since the 1994 National Assessment of Educational Progress report revealed that 41% of all 4th graders, 31% of all 8th graders and 25% of all high school seniors scored below the basic reading level there has been a major shift back to learning to read phonetically which had been widely replaced by the whole-language method of teaching reading by immersion. Now, many parents, teachers and entire states are returning to phonics, which teaches students the connections between symbols — the letters of the alphabet — and sounds.

Usually phonics is taught separately as writer, Trish Mylet experienced when her three year old son was learning to read. "Most phonetic books isolated reading skills from other areas of learning, and often the stories were not loving, were not nurturing," Mylet says.  "I realized there was a need for phonetic books that were positive and fun, and which integrated more of the curriculum."  So Mylet, along with illustrator Antoinette Sheffield, developed, and under the name Sizzy Books, published FUN PHONICS, Children, Today’s Joy! which contains a detailed program guide and 19 books filled with fun stories and activities.

In FUN PHONICS! most stories have a fill-in-the-blank page to verify the child’s comprehension of the story. These consumable books can be drawn in as the child reviews and expands on the stories, some with an O. Henry-type ending — the child chooses what happens. The books feature the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

"FUN PHONICS! is designed to be the child’s first set of books," Sheffield says. "Instead of memorizing thousands of words, the child learns to sound out words, thus experiencing the ease of reading. Just like learning to walk, the child learns to read one small step at a time."

FUN PHONICS, Children, Today’s Joy! has been adopted by the State of Georgia's Department of Education for its Reading First Program, and by the State of New Mexico's Department of Education's Instructional Materials Bureau for its Language Acquisition Reading Skills Section.  FUN PHONICS! is used throughout the world by young readers (ages 3-8), and in special education, ESL, and adult learning classes.
